Chapter Fifteen

Three days later, at Karisoke, Kristen sat down to compose a letter to the Leaky Foundation explaining the events of the previous week. Skirting around the facts of the physical attacks on Bizimana and on the Saudi required a certain delicacy, if not evasiveness, and she found it hard to concentrate, for the blustery rain drumming on her corrugated tin roof caused an annoying clatter. A vigorous double rap on the door was the last straw, and she tossed her ballpoint pen on the table.

“Come in!” she called out and the door flew open, bringing a spray of rain with it.

Peter shut the door behind him, but not before a puddle had formed at his feet. She stood up and threw him a rag.

“Sorry.” He caught it and slid it in circles with his foot to sop up the water. “I hope this doesn’t keep up. It’s impossible to get to the gorillas,” he groused as he took off his jacket and hung it by the hood on the door hook. He slid the wet rag under it to catch the drips. “I left first thing in the morning, while it was still drizzling, but as soon as I found group three, the skies opened up. They’re fine, by the way.”

“Well, at least the rain discourages poachers. No sign of Zigirazo’s thugs either, even after four days. The monsoon’s keeping everyone at home. So, to what do I owe the pleasure? Do you have a report?”

He wiped his damp hands on his thighs and warmed them over the stove. “No, I don’t. It takes twice as long to locate the gorillas, and when I do find them, there’s just a bunch of them huddled together soaking wet. You can’t even see who’s who.”

“What about snares? Have you come across any?”

“Aside from the fact that you can’t even spot them with the dim light, wall of water, and blowing branches, no, I haven’t. But I just can’t keep this up.”

“Well, this is the rainy season. If the gorillas have to endure it, so do we. It’s part of the deal.”

“Yeah, but doing both my work and Dana’s wasn’t part of the deal.”

She leaned back in her chair. “I’m sorry you feel that way. We’re all doing extra work for the moment. But you know the reason. Dana is the only thing between Mwelu and her captors. If you can think of a better solution, I’d be glad to hear it.”

“Why not just leave the gorilla with Rudy and let Dana come back to work?”

“After all this time, you still don’t know about baby gorillas? Mwelu has to have someone with her all the time. I thought you were as concerned about her as we were.”

“Yeah, well, we need to talk about that, too. It’s not just Dana being away and leaving me her work. That whole kidnapping business has been bothering me, too. It’s just not my way to break the law. And then to be beaten up by people I can’t even have arrested.
